Are their references to weed in the bible? Did Jesus smoke cannabis? We believe that if you shun cannabis, you shun god’s work, which is a beautiful and medicinal plant. Weed inspires feelings of peace, love, and happiness, which directly align with Jesus’ teachings.
Let’s first look into the possible references to marijuana in the bible…
Sula Benet was an etymologist from Poland who concluded in 1936 that the Hebrew words “q’nah-bosem” found at Exodus 30:23 were etymologically related to “cannabis” and then reached the further conclusion that the anointing oil included marijuana. She noted the similarities with words from other Middle Eastern language groups. She also annotated that the word could be used to reference a reed plant or a hemp plant, but she reached the definite conclusion that in the Exodus passage it meant the hemp plant. (I realize this was not the main point of her treatise, but it is the point that most impacts the present debate.) Others have stated that the Hebrew University supports this view, although no one apparently has been able to come up with a definitive source at that university for this statement.
In addition, God says in Genesis 1:29 that
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
and Genesis 9:3
Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
Last, but not least, a professor in the Department for Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products at Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School and School of Pharmacy, Institute for Drug Research, Dr. Ralph Mechoulam believes that there may be one reference to marijuana in Ezekiel 27:17, translated sometimes as “millet”
We must also consider Marijuana & Hemp use in Biblical Times….
In biblical times, hemp and cannabis were commonly used for religious ceremonies, clothing, medication, relaxation, paper, cord, sails, fishnet, oil, sealant, incense, and food.
From Isaiah 18:4-5
For so the Lord said unto me, “I will take my rest and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs. For afore harvest, when the bud is perfect and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks and take away and cut down the branches.”
